Mike Kubat – Writer
Mike Kubat never foresaw a
successful career in animation. In
fact, after a series of illustrious jobs ranging from delivering pizza to
delivering prostitutes, animation was the furthest thing from Mike’s mind.
“I always wanted to be a rock star,” says Mike.
“Something about women throwing their undergarments at me while I
played really bad songs was very appealing to me at one point in my life...”
Packing his bags and moving to
Hollywood from his native hometown of Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, Mike began
his pursuit of rock stardom. Alas,
after several years and several band changes, stardom eluded Mike, so he settled
down for the hyper-exciting world of accounting.
This was as entirely boring as you might expect.
“There’s only so much you can creatively do with spreadsheets and
ledgers… like turn them into paper airplanes for instance.”
Obviously, Mike was in desperate need of a creative outlet.
Animation, like Mike himself,
happened by accident. His brother
Dan, already an accomplished storyboard artist, called upon Mike to help him
write and develop some original properties.
“Writing was more or less a hobby of mine,” says Mike.
“I was actually surprised when I started getting paid for it!”
Working with various artists, Mike continued to develop original ideas,
while searching for that elusive ‘break’ that would get him into television.
When it finally did come, it came big.
Mike landed a position writing for
critically acclaimed (and notoriously abusive) artist Danny Antonucci of ‘Lupo
The Butcher’ infamy. Mike was
picked as a lead writer for Antonucci’s and Cartoon Network’s ‘Ed,
Edd n’ Eddy’. The award
winning cartoon, now in it’s 4th season, continues to garner the
highest ratings for the network and is currently shown in over 50 countries
worldwide. Mike has written or
co-written over 30 episodes of ‘Ed, Edd
n’ Eddy’.
Mike has also experimented with
internet animation, working alongside Emmy-award winning director Rob Davies of
Atomic Cartoons on projects such as ‘Bad
Cop’, ‘Flippo and the Sea Nymphs’, ‘Doc Shock’ and others.
It has also provided a means of showcasing original properties such as
the ones found on Mike’s website, www.duckyousucker.com.
Through his company, Duck, You Sucker! Productions, Mike has proven himself a creative and innovative force in the animation industry, just placing in the top 3 (#1 in the popular vote!) of Animation Magazine’s Pitch Party contest with the original property, ‘Chicken Rad’ and Co-Developing/Story Editing Atomic Cartoons’ ‘Atomic Betty’. It is this passion, experience, diversity and drive that continue to propel Mike to great accomplishments. “I can also play guitar and run with scissors, though not at the same time.” Well, even a guy like Mike has his limitations...
